Today we dig deeper into the basic concepts of music and understand why we end up liking shitty bands with no talent or content.

This is all just the basic concepts, don't expect to become a music graduate from this. Dumbass.
Melody
A good song should have a good melody, just like a good solo should be easy to whistle. Melodies usually come from scales like a happy birthday or the lion sleeps tonight, what we truly take from this is that when the notes are put together to make a song they should sound good.
Rhythm
It's what you dance or go "ta ta taaa" to, it doesn't need to be specified by notes and is what makes most metal songs - that's why you can write metal songs with just 0-0-0-x-0-x-x-0-0.
Harmony
Instruments should complement each other even when playing different things, having a good harmony means you're doing music right.
Them Feels
Timbre, effects, the musician's personal way of playing, whatever differentiates a band from another. Mudvayne and Static-x riffs could sound the same, but they feel different because they're written by different musicians.

So we put all those ingredients together and we get... the powerpuff girls?
No, we get a song and it may be shitty or good depending on how much work you put on them. When you write a song you have a different layer for each instrument and you have to make it all come together in the end. It's even better if you work around a singular idea instead of just throwing a bunch around and hoping it all fits (like Opeth does), you get to work on what the sound should sound like and giving information through the instrumental other than just the lyrics.

So why do we like shitty bands?
The last two parts - Rhythm and Feeling - producers know how they should sell bad music, different pitches, being more brvtal kvlt, and making the whole song just feel acceptable or fool us into thinking it's complicated and well written. Or really they just tell you a certain band is good and popular and you believe them. Stop reading Metal Hammer and you should get a better playlist in no time.
