I should start out by saying - Opeth is a try-hard band and its fans just don't know much about music.
Some may think this is amazing prog music but today we're going to analyze 3 of their songs (the first 3 i found on youtube, yes) and prove that they may not be a terrible band but they most certainly are not even close to amazing.
So this week all I could think about was how well written Porcupine Tree's songs are (and my dear Blackhawks, god help us get that cup!) and I felt I needed to analyze at least one of them here, so we're going with the easy one: Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
A french band that can be fun and have an amazing quality in simplicity. They go from the more repetitive and in a way, heavy songs like World on Fire and Furia to the more intense put-dillinger-escape-plan-to-shame songs like Même Si J'explose. The riffs never vary much from the usual barre chords but it finds a way to captivate you through rhythm and energy. Simple riffs, BUT, compensates with everything else. A bit repetitive but still, fun.
8/10 I was listening to 3PAC when youtube recommended me a Jonlajoie video
BITCH JONLAJOIE AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON 3PAC BITCH. #dontgiveahoot Back when I first listened to this song it was labeled "K.I.N.G." but what the hell do I know I remember I thought you couldn't get more badass than this, King was the limit, that was what we all were trying to reach: headbanging to silence, looking evil with your upside down cross necklace, being mad all the time, having bitches crawl on your table.. actually satyricon is that black metal band that got tired of being trve kvelt in their mom's basement and decided they wanted to go get some bitches and to do that they went for a style closer to rock, music videos and understandable logo and vocals. This makes me wonder if it's too late to go back to wearing satanic symbols and band shirts If you ignore the pseudo-anarchist bullshit of the lyrics you find a nice combination of simplistic riffs and kind of arabic(?) sounding keys in a industrial approach that reminds me a bit of Deathstars(their music is shit but actually fun), the vocals go well with the evil genius dictator thing they got going on. Sadly the rest of their stuff isn''t as good, with the exception of Telepath. Maybe I missed an album there that is actually good, it's been a while since I've done any research on this band. The video is good but a bit dumb, vocals fit in well, the keys are really what makes the song 'special', a good listen in general.
7/10 First thing I'll say is: I don't like the vocals and I don't like the videos. They try to be theatric but end up looking dumb. The drums are fast, the sound is really symphonic making for a good mix. The other instruments accompany the keys so you can easily understand what's going on. Now look at this effort to look cool and evil with a couple dancing ballet, or a lesson about how you should never leave your girl unattended or she's going to take the first dude that comes along, even if he's green.. gold.. i don't know, and then you're left with no option but to let her die in a pool of blood until she comes back with a smile thinking "gotcha, sucka!" or, as the first comment on youtube said
"Too much pain this fucking song man, way too much. I teared up at the end. It speaks about real life shit. Two soulmates who have found each other. They sung the song of their union. But the woman lacked the spiritual knowledge and thought by going with an ascended master her soul would ascend faster. Instead of working with her soulmate to ascend together, she was selfish and lacked patience. She lost both and was separated from unity because of her selfishness. She killed her soul by herself. Her lover was tortured because without her he can't ascend. He learned to forgive his insurmountable pain by embracing pain and doing all it takes to revive her soul. She then awakens... Too much pain in this song as it speaks of life... Man ..." Damn women, you can't trust them. Good band overall but only a few good songs, I don't like the vocals but the rest is pretty good. 7/10 YEEEEE HAW Grab your lady friend and come dance 'round the pit 'cause I looked up "fried chicken" And a little bit of chicken fried Cold beer on a Friday night A pair of jeans that fit just right And the radio on I love to see the sun rise See the love in my woman's eyes Feel the touch of a precious child And know a mother's love And we can't forget about the soldiers who sacrifice their lives so we can stay in 'MURICA eating fried chicken Man this sucks so bad HAHA
2/10 But Zac Brown Band isn't all bad, they have agood cover of Devil Went Down to Georgia. A 90's band that couldn't compete with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains for space and a random find on youtube's mixes. Youtube leads you to Far Behind, a boring slow song. The good songs are Change, You and Cover Me. The theme for the lyrics are the usual from all those bands, drugs and love. The video reminds me of watching mtv as a kid and I like that. The riffs don't have anything special about them, the rhythm for the vocals is creative but that's common in the genre, the band in general is a good listen but nothing amazing.
